III.
Length of lesson
(number of days):
This
lesson will be a final project within a unit on Health and nutrition. The unit will take about two weeks, and this
actual project will take about 2 days of planning out and 3-4 times in the lab.
IV.
Summary
description:
After
learning about the food pyramid and balanced meals, students will create a menu
for a restaurant using Microsoft Publisher.
The students will be in groups of 4-5 according to their strengths and
interests.
·
Mathematical/Logical
– These students will create logical prices
for the
foods on the menu and calculate calories
to include on the menu based on information from Calorie Counter.
·
Verbal/Linguistic
– These students will proofread others’ work
and do
the actual writing/typing of the final menu.
·
Musical/Rhythmic
– These students will create a jingle or song that will be included in a
commercial for the restaurant.
·
Bodily/Kinesthetic
– These students will act out or present the
commercial to the class.
·
Visual/Spatial –
These students will design the format/layout of the menu and choose graphics
and pictures to include.
·
Intrapersonal/Interpersonal
– These strengths will be included
naturally
throughout the duration of the project.

differentiation (readiness, interests, learning profiles):
Students will be grouped by their multiple intelligences. There will be one person in each group from
each intelligence group. This will be
determined by an assessment done earlier.

Procedures:
1.
Learn about the
food pyramid and balanced meals as part of science class.
2. Take the MI quiz and divide into groups accordingly.
3. As a group, plan a menu of at least 4 balanced meals.
4. Divide jobs according to strengths as listed above.
5. Video tape commercials and print out menus.
6. Evaluate commercials as a class.

Post-Assessment:
Students
will be assessed as a group by the teacher.
The teacher will use a rubric including criteria such as:

Were the meals
balanced according to the food pyramid?
·
Was the calorie
content consistent with the needs of an average person? Were the totals and
prices accurate?
·
Did the
commercial include important information about the healthy meals and “selling
point” of the restaurant?
·
Appropriate
grammar and punctuation

Extensions:
1.
Have students set up a pretend restaurant and order from each others’ menus and
if capable, pay for their meals.
2.
Help prepare a meal from their menu or have a parent bring in a sample meal and
have a food tasting expo.
