How
it Works:
1) Between heartbeats, the heart relaxes
and both atriums fill up with blood.
2)
The left side of the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to the arteries, which
carry blood to all body parts.
3)
Blood from the arteries enters the capillaries. In the capillaries, oxygen
and food move to the cells and the waste gases and carbon dioxide move into
the blood. This blood enters the
veins.
4)
Veins carry the blood with carbon dioxide to the right side of the heart.
The heart pumps blood to the lungs.
5)
In the lungs, the blood picks up oxygen, and gives off carbon dioxide. The
blood moves from the lungs to the left side of the heart, and the journey
begins again.
