Circulatory System

How it Works

1. Left side heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to the arteries, and then carries it to body parts. 2. Blood from arteries enter capillaries. In capillaries, food and oxygen move to cells, and then carbon dioxide (waste gas) moves into the blood. Blood enters veins. 3. Veins carry blood with carbon dioxide to right of heart. Right side of heart pumps to lungs. 4. In lungs blood picks up oxygen and gives off carbon dioxide. Blood moves from lungs to left side of heart then repeats.

Heart Circulation

1. Between heartbeats, heart relaxes in both atriums fill with blood. 2. When atriums contract, blood is forced from atriums though one-way openings. Right atriums pumps blood into right ventricle. Left atrium pumps blood into left ventricle. 3. The lungs get blood from the right ventricle. The body gets blood from the left ventricle.

What does the system need

to work properly?

You need to exercise, keep your heart healthy, eat healthy, and don’t inhale bad air.

Interesting facts

Blood is purple-blue until mixed with oxygen then turns to red. A microscope can only see capillaries.

What does system do to fight disease?

The heart delivers white blood cells to the body to fight diseases.
