Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14th through activities, learning, and entertainment.

 

This activity will send you on an Internet exploration to find out about PI.  Use the search engines and resources linked from this page to answer the questions and find the items listed below.  Insert your answers into the answer document then print a copy to hand in before the end of class.

  1. In your own words, list two definitions of pi.

 

  1. With the use of computers, Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Find the number of decimal places of Pi that has been calculated since 1999.

 

  1. Look up the first 10,000 digits of Pi. What is the 50th digit?

 

  1. What famous mathematician was born on March 14?

 

  1. What day is celebrated on July 22?

Do a GOOGLE search to find answers to the questions below.

 

  1. Who holds the record for memorizing and reciting the most digits of pi? List the number of digits, name, and year.

 

  1. Find the US city with a ZIP code containing the first 5 digits of pi (beginning with the 3). Name the city and state.

 

  1. Find the US state which tried to legislate a value of pi. Name the state and the year in which the action was taken.

 

  1. Find mathematical formulas which include pi. List the formula in symbols and tell what each formula represents.

 

  1. Find a recipe for your favorite PIE. Copy and paste into the answer document.
